Good news for expats as Abu Dhabi plans to cut drug prices

ABU DHABI - Good news for expatriates. The General Authority for Health Services for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (GHAS) is planning to cut down prices of drugs.

Responding to a question on the Authority's plans to alleviate the suffering of the expatriate from high prices of drugs, following the two year back decision of the Ministry of Health to stop free of charge dispense of drugs to expatriates, Mohammed bin Butti Al Qubaisi, Director of the Office of Shaikh Hamid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the Economic Department and Chairman of General Authority for Health Services for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, said to ensure the availability of pharmaceutical products at affordable prices, the Authority is embarking on certain projects to guarantee the availability of drugs at cost-effective prices soon.

Mr Qubaisi, was speaking to reporters in the capital on the sidelines of a five-day 'Premier Training Seminar for Hospitals in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA), which started yesterday in the capital.

He said the percentage of expatriates who visit hospitals, was around 80 per cent, noting that the consumer pays 70 per cent profit to the supplier.

He said the Authority has adopted a project, to make the price of drugs available to the public and specify the profit percentage.
