HCT to add eight new courses

DUBAI - The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) will launch eight new programmes for the academic year 2004-2005 starting from September 2004. The new programmes were approved recently by the HCT Governing Council chaired by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology.

The new programmes includes the Higher Diploma in Paramedical Studies which will prepare students for employment as Paramedics who work primarily with ambulance and emergency services to provide pre-hospital care to victims of accidents. The programme is sponsored by the Dubai Police Headquarters (DPHQ). Entrants to the programme are selected jointly by DPHQ and HCT and graduates will meet the requirements for employment by DPHQ.

The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in English Language Teaching in Schools programme is a four-year degree designed to prepare excellent and innovative English language teachers for UAE schools. Students will spend time working in schools during each semester of the degree.

Another programme, the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Educational Technology is a four-year degree designed to prepare excellent and innovative Information Technology teachers for UAE schools.

The Diploma in Web Development will provide students with the technical skills needed to be certified as Web Masters. The programme focuses on web implementation from back-end systems. Graduates of the diploma have the opportunity to progress into the Higher Diploma in Web Development for additional employment options.

The Higher Diploma in Web Development will give students an understanding of worldwide electronic communication. The students will learn how information systems operate within organisations and how they link organisations and the public together.

Meanwhile, the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology programme to be launched this year will prepare graduates to perform effectively as Engineering Technologists in the UAE electrical power industry.

Graduates from the programme specialise in electrical power technology and are able to take up employment with electrical utilities, petrochemical industry, electrical maintenance organisations, engineering consultants, contractors, the military and local/federal government authorities involved in the electrical power field.

The Higher Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology programme prepares students for positions as technologists in the communications, computer, process control and instrumentation sectors.

The scope of the programme is broad based covering advanced analog, digital, microprocessor and computer based systems, instrumentation, process control and communications. Graduates will be able to operate, build, test, trouble-shoot and maintain electrical and electronic equipment in accordance with appropriate health, safety and environmental considerations and regulations.

Lastly, the Diploma in Municipal Services Engineering Technology prepares graduates to perform effectively as engineering technicians in the specialist engineering fields of Road Surveying, Municipal Engineering, Building Construction, Geographic Information Systems and Safety Engineering.
