Health Ministry takes steps to conserve energy, water
DUBAI - The UAE Ministry of Health is going green, literally.
According to a new initiative announced on Tuesday, officials said that under a pilot project to conserve energy and water, employees would be asked to bring in plants and make the office greener and environment healthier. The project was launched at the ministry’s headquarters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
“Once the project assessment has been done after three months, it could be extended to include hospitals and health centres under the ministry,” said Acting Director-General Salem Al Darmaki.
“We want our employees to work in a healthy environment,” he added.
The ministry recently issued a circular to all department directors, medical districts, hospitals and health centres to start the mechanism and apply the initiative. All departments will also be required to form teams to complete the assigned tasks.
Promoting use of energy-saving bulbs to using recycled paper and checking for water leakages, the ministry hopes to give it precedence.
“We will also encourage use of power-saving computers within the ministry,” explained Dr Hessa Al Masood, Head of Institutional Excellence Department at the ministry. “Recycling will also be done in the correct way,” she added.
“A regular evaluation of the ministry’s health facilities all over the UAE will be done to review implementation of the initiative,” said Darmaki.
The health facility best implementing the initiative will be given the newly launched ‘Minister of Health Environment Award’.
The initiative also encourages reducing air pollution and banning use of chemical products in projects under construction at the ministry.
