Health services match international standards

ABU DHABI - The Health services in the UAE are of international standards matching those of advanced Western countries, this was stated by Dr Abdul Rahim Jaffar, Under-Secretary and Ministerial Special Advisor of the Ministry of Health.

Dr Jaffar speaking at the opening session of the 11th UAE Surgical Conference told the delegates that the country excelled in medical disciplines like cardiology, neuro-surgery and laparoscopy which are as good as in developed countries.

The two-day event is being organised by the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the General Authority for Health Services for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (GHAS), the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the UAE University and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, UK.


Renowned international and local experts in the field of surgery are participating in the conference.

The under-secretary said the government was committed to provide state-of-the-art health facilities to serve UAE residents doing away with the need to send patients abroad for any complicated treatment.

Dr Abdul Rahim who is also Chairman of the Conference Organising Committee mentioned that there are 30 modern and well equipped hospitals with 4473 beds with nearly 200,000 admissions in hospitals, 4867 nurses and 1973 physicians employed at these hospitals.

He said that 60332 surgeries are carried out every year while general surgery accounts for 26 per cent of these operations and more than one third of these operations are major surgeries.

He said the conference would assist local surgeons in keeping abreast with rapid advances in the field of surgery and interacting with foreign expert to garner knowledge about this changing field of medicine.

Dr Jaffar revealed that with the help of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow the ministry has embarked on establishing telemedicine centres at all the hospitals in the country.

He said in view of the rise in road accidents in the country, which has become on of the main killers, whereby 615 deaths attribute to accidents were registered in 2001, there is an urgent need to develop means of patient transport and crisis management at health institutions in the country.

For his part, Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Midfa, Minister of Health lauded the conference for updating specialists on the recent technologies in different types of surgeries.

The minister said that the conference has become a distinguished scientific forum for surgeons to exchange expertise in minimal invasive surgery, oncology and trauma.

"The UAE surgical conference has become a prestigious regional forum that attracts elites of surgeons from different parts of the world," said Mr Midfa.

He underlined that the annual event also shows the importance of cooperation between health authorities and institutions in the country, which "will positively reflect in our process to develop health services throughout the UAE," he said.

The 11th UAE Surgical Conference will discuss different topics including, ultrasonic devices in advanced laparoscopic surgery, videothoracic surgery, trauma of colon and rectum, laparoscopic surgery for morbid obesity and laparoscopic assisted procedures in paediatric surgery.
