He will receive the award from Indian President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at a special ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday. Prior to receiving the award, Mr Kumar will pay a courtesy call at Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's residence on Thursday.

Mr Kumar, who left for New Delhi yesterday, described the honour as a very touching gesture of public recognition by the Indian government. "I thank my students, colleagues, the school management and in general the Indian diaspora who have been extending their continuous support to make education not only my profession, but my passion," said Mr Kumar who has been serving as the principal of one of the largest Indian schools in the Gulf for eight years.

Mr Kumar will receive a cash award of Rs25,000, a medal and a citation for his remarakable contribution made to Indian education in his career that spans 20 years. The 48-year-old principal, who has to his credit several textbooks which are now a part of the CBSE curriculum schools in India and overseas, started his career as a professor in a college in Uttar Pradesh in 1981-82. Thereafter, he was appointed principal of a school in India where he served for 12 years and was awarded the President's (DAV) Overseas scholarship in 1990-91. In 1993-94 he was sponsored by the Ontario Teachers' Federation to study the system of education in Canada.

For Mr Kumar, the National Award 2002 is not his first accolade. Last year, he was conferred the Outstanding CBSE Teacher Award for 2001 by Murli Manohar Joshi, Minister of Human Resource Development, India. Besides, he was also presented with the prestigious Shaikh Hamdan Award for Distinguished School and School Administration 2002 by the Dubai Government.
