Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are considered to be one of the fastest growing environmental influences, with technology increasing the level of impact on the human population all over the globe. Children are particularly affected by electromagnetic radiation.

A telecommunications engineer, the speaker Hans Joerg Schlueter is the Director of Step Ahead International, Germany, which is a partner of Telematics Networks & Communications, Dubai. Schlueter's experience spans some 30 years in the field of Telecommunication and Electromagnetic Radiation Testing and Monitoring, of which a considerable period has been spent working with various organisations in the Gulf region.

In his presentation he gave an overview of EMF, its principles and effects, international regulations, legislations and standards, and protective measures to counter or control the effects of EMF. Mr Schleuter explained in the course of his lecture that electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields that exist wherever voltage and currents are present have certain biological effects, which can be detrimental to human health.

Speaking about the implication of EMF security measures in the UAE in the light of ambitious real estate developments, the speaker explained, “New power plants and telecommunication infrastructure expansion are a must to meet the demands for more energy and enhanced mobile, radar, satellite communication and air traffic control. These are additional sources for more electromagnetic radiation. People should be well aware of the harmful effects of EMF, but at the same time they should also be informed that the authorities of the country have taken various action of EMF Protection and monitoring."

This was the third in a line of eight free lectures to be brought to the public by EEG this year.

EEG's Chairperson Mrs Habiba Al Marashi said, "Electromagnetic fields are something to which we are all exposed to in varying degrees. Children are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of EMF, if not monitored.”
