Controlling waste disposal and bringing local establishments under strict surveillance, UAE Minister of Information and Culture Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has said.
Answering a query from an expatriate student on the 'Ask the Minister' link page of the Ministry of Information's official web site, uaeinteract.com, Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said that the Federal Environment Agency (FEA), the UAE's main environment body, already approved the law last December and will be enforced as soon it is endorsed by the Federal Cabinet.
Aref Alinia, an expatriate student based in Dubai, wanted to know what were the main steps the UAE government was taking to control industrial pollution in factories and companies, and how it planned to provide residents of the country a healthy environment, comparable with international eco-friendly countries.
The minister said that Article 17 of the Anti-Pollution Law would force all establishments operating in the country to comply with maximum limits of emissions of gas and other harmful substances and place them under periodic monitoring.
The law will also require them to carry out regular analysis and assessments on air pollution and the level of emission at their establishments that will be submitted to competent authorities, he said.
He clarified that the law also included rules on construction, drilling and exploration activities, as well as the transportation of waste, earth and other building materials, in addition to defining conditions to design chimneys, chutes and other smoke channels in high-rise buildings.
Shaikh Abdullah expressed his happiness at remarkable results that the UAE had achieved in the preservation of good air quality, use of unleaded petrol, zero reduction in emission from oil refineries, disposal of solid and liquid household wastes with recycling and material recovery, hazardous industrial wastes disposal in an environment-friendly manner to decrease harmful effects and for the use of clean fuel in power generation stations.
