The Dubai Court of First Instance also fined the defendant, 27-year-old S.Z.J., Dh50,000 for possession and trafficking of a narcotic substance.
Qat leaves are chewed in Yemen and other parts of Africa to produce excitement, banish sleep, and promote communication. It was also used as a stimulant to dispel feelings of hunger and fatigue. This large shrub originated in Ethiopia and spread until its use spread to Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Arabia, the Congo, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. Qat was used in Yemen even before coffee.
The defendant was arrested on July 28 this year after arriving in Dubai on a flight from Ethiopia. A customs agent at the airport noticed that the defendant was not looking normal and acting suspiciously.
The defendant was escorted to the investigation room. A search of a white plastic bag in the defendant's possession revealed two vases, containing foreign bodies after they were scanned through the X-ray machine.
The vases were broken and the contents were revealed to be bundles of leaves that had the distinctive shape and look of Qat. The defendant denied any knowledge of the Qat leaves and told police that the vases were given to him by a friend of his brother in Ethiopia who asked him if he could deliver the vases to his friend in Dubai.
The court also sentenced E.S.M., a 22-year-old Iranian national, to life in prison for trading in narcotic substances, possession and abuse of narcotic substances. The defendant was also fined Dh2,000 for entering and staying in the country illegally.
The defendant was caught in a police sting operation in which a police informant and an undercover officer purchased 1,040 grams of heroin from the defendant for Dh35,000. The exchange took place in a car along a road in Nad Al Sheba on the evening of May 30 this year. The defendant was taken into custody after the completion of the exchange.
