which is managing Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah, to cease its operations from January 1.

The ministry’s decision to terminate the contract before completion of the three-year period is expected to slow down the efforts to make Al Qasimi Hospital as the largest referral centre in the Northern Emirates.

In October, the Victorian Hospital Association (VHA) Global was given a warning letter and asked to improve its medical and administrative services.

A top official from the MoH said the company, that was appointed in September 2006 for three years, failed to comply with the terms of the contract that underlined the training and absorption of four Emiratis in the positions of chief executive officer, medical director, operations director and nursing director.

Dr Ali Shukr, Chief Executive Officer for Support Services in the MoH, admitted that there were problems in the hospital. He, however, said that the Australian company had given them a lot of important information for the future.

“We now feel that our people are trained enough and are capable of managing the hospital,” he added.

The MoH has listed poor performance of medical cadres and administrative practices among the 22 weak points in administrative and medical fields.

The VHA Global was hired to prepare the hospital for international accreditation and also provide systems to train local senior staff in modern hospital operations and enhance the physical facilities to accommodate the teaching and learning needs of students of medicine in the UAE.

Dr Alan Sandford, Chief Medical Officer at Al Qasimi, and representative of VHA Global, said his company had decided to ‘withdraw from the contract’ since the proposals put to the MoH did not progress.

“We thought it was better to stop than be criticised,” he said while speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday. He, however, admitted that several projects were executed.

“But whatever is currently being developed will continue as is,” he added.

He also said that VHA Global would now offer its services to the Sharjah Medical District.

Replacing VHA Global, now Dr Arif Noorani is the Executive Director, Dr Saqr Al Mualla is his deputy, and Noura Al Nauman is Chairperson, Board of Directors.
