Ever since he went missing in October last year, I was hoping that he would be living somewhere. It was a shock for me when I identified his body in the police morgue in Sharjah on Monday, said Ummer, brother of 39-year-old Indian national, Kamal, hailing from Kerala, who had been reported missing in Sharjah since October.

A sobbing Ummer told Khaleej Times that he had been searching for his brother ever since he went missing in Sharjah. “On October 6, I tried to call him on his mobile but it was switched off. I tried to call again several times but could not reach him. His visa had expired and I thought he had gone into hiding to save himself from the police. But, when I failed to get any information about him, I lodged complaints at several police stations in Sharjah and Dubai,” the brother disclosed.

"I went over to his accommodation located in Mussalah when I failed to reach him on the phone. But his room mates told me that he had been missing since October 2.” "I had my doubts that he could have been arrested by officials for illegal stay in the country. But when I enquired at all the police stations they had no clue,” the brother said. It was finally volunteers from a social organisation in Sharjah who urged him to visit the morgue. "I immediately recognised the body of my missing brother," Ummer said. An inconsolable Ummer disclosed that the body cannot be repatriated since it had been in the morgue for three months. The burial is to be held soon in Sharjah. "I have already informed my mother and sister about his death and they are also in a state of shock. We were all hoping that he was still alive," he said. Mathew, a volunteer of 'Sneha Thazhvara', the social organisation that notified Ummer about the body said, "We were informed by the police about an unclaimed body of an Indian lying in the morgue. We were able to get some details when we reached the mortuary, and with the help of another organisation managed to find his brother."

Mathew disclosed that post mortem reports revealed that Kamal had died of a cardiac arrest while travelling in a taxi in Sharjah on the evening of October 5. Though the taxi driver took him to Kuwaiti hospital, they could not save his life. Kamal had been working in Sharjah since 1994.
