Mixed Arabic, Chinese scripts to be showcased

ABU DHABI — Nearly 200 pieces of mixed Arabic and Chinese scripts will be on display at the Cultural Foundation in the capital from October 17 to 19 in a major exhibition of Chinese Islamic Art.

The calligraphy works are often shaped into Chinese architecture with Islamic elements.

Haji Noor Deen, whose work will be showcased at the exhibition, is a well-known figure. Born in China in 1963, he lectures on the art of Arabic calligraphy at the Islamic College in Zhen Zhou. In addition, Deen researches Islamic culture at the Henan Academy of Sciences. In 1997, the artist became the first Chinese Muslim to be awarded the “Egyptian Certificate of Arabic Calligraphy” award and to be admitted as a member of the Association of Egyptian Calligraphy.

In the past decade, Deen has showcased his work and lectured at some of the most prestigious institutes, including Harvard, Cambridge and California-Berkley universities, as well as the Bukhari and Zaytuna institutes.

The Abu Dhabi exhibition is being organised by Shaikha Alyazia bint Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, through her recently established media and art company, Anasy.

Deen will hold a one-day workshop on the art of calligraphy, although the date and place of the workshop are still to be decided.
