Employees must file their complaints in the MoL office in the emirate where they have obtained visa, officials say. Employees say this is causing them problems, as they have to go a long way to file complaints and follow them up.

Take Christopher Ramos Raymundo, an employee with a company in the capital (he declined to disclose the company’s name). His visa was issued from Sharjah. The worker wanted to leave after working for four months in his company, but the branch manager refused to let him leave before paying Dh4,000.

“I can’t travel to Sharjah to file a complaint with the MoL and then again visit it to follow it up. What can I do?” he asked.

Emad Abdul Sattar, an Egyptian, has settled his problems with his company without any help from the MoL. He tried to complain, but the clerks at the dispute department in the Abu Dhabi office allegedly told him that he couldn’t file any application here because his labour card was issued from Sharjah.

Emad worked for the Kuwait Food Company (Americana) and was suffering from health problems, but the company’s management refused to cancel his labour card to go back to his country.

When Emad tried to file a claim with the ministry’s office in Abu Dhabi, he was reportedly told that he should file the claim with the Sharjah office since his visa was issued from Sharjah.

Emad said, “I tried to sort out the problem myself after I lost the hope of getting any help from the MoL. Meanwhile, the company’s managers showed no consideration for me”.

“Sometimes workers don’t find a solution and their helplessness provides an opportunity to some companies to do whatever they want the labourers. We need the MoL to support workers,” said a worker on condition of anonymity.

Mona El Raarisi, legal advisor at the MoL, told Khaleej Times that the worker, who has a labour card from an emirate other than Abu Dhabi, can file an application “if” the minister has approved his plea to have the complaint filed in the Abu Dhabi office. Only after the recommendation of the minister can officials accept complaints from workers.
