The 13-member committee has Mr Thomas John as its President, A. M. Anwar as General-Secretary, and Rajan Zacharia as the Treasurer. All the members were unanimously elected to their respective posts except that of the vice-president.
One of the oldest clubs of the Indian community in the UAE, India Social Centre was started some three decades back and presently has around 1,200 members in its fold including their family. Shaikh Saeed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Seaport Authority, is the patron of the ISC.
"The main task at hand for the new office-bearers is undertaking the construction of a new building for the club on the land received from the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, near the Water and Electricity Club on Mina Road," remarked Mr John.
The estimated cost for the state-of-the-art club, which will have all modern amenities including a fully equipped gymnasium, swimming pool and other sports and recreational facilities, is around Dh20 million.
A building committee under the leadership of B. R. Shetty has already been formed to collect funds for the same.
