After waiting for three months to reap what he sowed, farmer Zeid Ali Saleh was ecstatic when he harvested the peanut crop.
Planting the peanut was just a mere idea which has turned into a reality, says Saleh who is the owner of farm No. 37 located in Al Nahda.
"I plant all kinds of vegetables on my farm but I was working hard to achieve my ambitions to plant new kinds of crops that cope with the climate and soil of UAE. I sowed sesame last year, both the white and red kind, and achieved good results. This year I planted peanut and I will grow another kind of crop next year so as to contribute to achieve the self-sufficiency of UAE regarding such crops," Saleh said.
He said that the land gives high yields to the farmers and planters provided they exert themselves.
"I did not hesitate for a moment to go on trying these experiments as long as I have the will, insistence and the spirit of challenge to do that. I vowed to do my best since the day I got the farm in order to improve and develop it," he declared, adding, ''We should struggle to feel that we have roles in life.''
Saleh said he follows the instructions and principles of the late leader Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who advised to take care of the country and to do the best for the country's progress.
As for using chemical fertilisers in planting, he said that it is better to use organic fertilsers, especially in Abu Dhabi as the land there is not saline and good for the agriculture.
The Department of Municipalities and Agriculture in Abu Dhabi provides us with the essential requirements and needs beside the support of the supervisors and the agronomists who give us the advice and instructions for better method of planting, he added.
Mohammed Ali Al Beity, an agronomist of Al Nahda Centre, stated that it is a joy to be able to grow the peanuts and that prompts us to look forward to do a new experiment regarding planting a new kind of crops. He said the officials of the department also followed up and supervised all the experiments of the farmer (Saleh) when he sowed sesame last year and peanut this year.
Moreover, they extended assistance and support to him till he managed to grow such crop.
As for the benefits of peanuts, he said that the percentage of oil it bears can be as much as 46 per cent and it is considered one of the best oils.
