Over 350 delegates likely to attend GTAC 2003
DUBAI - Corporate heads, bankers, finance managers, diplomats and top-ranking professionals from different AGCC countries will be presented with an excellent opportunity to hone their leadership and public-speaking skills when they participate in the Gulf Toastmasters Annual Conference (GTAC 2003) scheduled to be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday and Friday.
The event hosted by the 14 UAE chapters of the Toastmasters International will be a gathering of distinguished speakers from all the AGCC countries and feature three basic categories for competition: international speech contest, humorous speech contest and table topics requiring impromptu speaking.
There will be nine participants from the AGCC countries in each of the categories who will vie for the position of best speaker, runner up and second runner up.
The topics can be pre-determined by the participants and involve any subject apart from religion, politics and sex.
The third part of the competition will however require spontaneous speaking on the part of the participants. The time-limit for the speeches will be two minutes and the speakers will be evaluated by an international panel of judges.
Speaking at a Press conference on Sunday evening, Balu Padmanabhan, Chairman of GTAC 2003 said: "We have over 375 registered delegates and with guests and sponsors, the number of attendees should be approximately 450."
The GTAC, he said, is held by rotation within the participating chapters.
"It is a privilege of the UAE chapter to host the event this year. We organised the event last in 1999 and it was then rated as one of the best held ever since it began a decade ago."
Tim Bingam, General Manager of Air BP Middle East, main sponsor of GTAC 2003, said : "Air BP is delighted to sponsor a regional event such as the GTAC. The Toastmasters promote two very important skills that BP encourages among its people, that is communication and leadership. In the future BP will partner Toastmasters to establish chapters in the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology in order to groom UAE nationals to be future leaders.
The highlight of the two-day event, in addition to the three main competitions, will be speeches by the two key-note speakers and internationally renowned toastmasters Mark Brown from the USA and Bob Urichuk from Canada.
Major Mohd Murad, Divisional Governor (UAE & Oman) described the Toastmasters International as an international body with a membership of more than 2.2 million people the world over and the credo of "Together Towards Tomorrow."
The UAE is currently the fastest growing region for toastmasters with the number of toastmasters clubs being on the rise.
"The mission of any toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth," Major Murad added.
