The authorities have banned restaurants here from preparing in the open foods like shawarma and falafel sandwiches.

The RAK Municipality has drawn up a comprehensive plan to prevent food joints from grilling chicken and meat in front of their shops and on pavements.

“This poses serious health hazards to the public,” Mubarek Al Shamsi, Director-General of the civic body, said.

The municipality also banned restaurants from setting up kitchens outside their shops.

“In stark violation of the emirate’s municipal and land rules and regulations, some restaurants and eateries used to set up makeshift kitchens outside their joints by using plywood and other such materials, which pose health and safety hazards besides marring the emirate’s beauty,” he said.

The official added that inspectors from the Public Health and Environment Protection and the Building and Engineering Sections of the municipality had been asked to pay inspection visits to ensure that restaurants adhere to the new rules.

“They have been given clear directives to make sure that eateries across the emirates strictly conform to the new rules and regulations,” Al Shamsi added.

The official also said that inspection teams had already caught a number of restaurants that didn’t conform to the set of rules.

“Investigations have been initiated regarding these violations before referring them to the judicial authorities,” he said.

The civic body recently levied Dh7,000 as fine on a restaurant found serving rotten pickles.
