Officials from Sharjah Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) said that though the finer details of the service were yet to be sorted out, the service was being started on popular public demand.

However, the Dh3 flat fare announced earlier has been hiked ‘temporarily’ by 50 fils, they say.

Fahd Al Awadi, General Manager of KGL-PTS (Kuwaiti Public Transport Service managing the fleet for SPTC), while speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday said, “For frequent users, we will offer discount cards in future, but initially the fare will start from Dh3.50 to any destination.”

SPTC is initially launching Route 14 that runs from Al Sharq area to Sharjah International Airport, arriving/departing at bus stops every 16 minutes.

“Eleven buses will ply on this route from today. We will await public feedback after which we will improve the remaining services on two more routes to be started by October,” explained Al Awadi.

He also explained that currently there was a longer distance between bus stops and ‘bus stop signs’ were still being installed.

“Because the terminals are yet to be set up, passengers will have to buy tickets on board,” he said.

The buses on Route 14 will run from Al Sharq Terminal through Al Arooba Street, Al Zahra Street, King Abdul Street, Rolla Square, Al Ittihad Square Park, King Faisal Street, Sharjah National Park on to Sharjah International Airport. Sixty-eight ‘bus-stop’ signs out of 1,300 have already been erected on different routes in the emirate.
