The crackdown was also covered by CNBC channel’s cameras.

According to Juma Al Leem, the Director of the Ministry’s Media Censorship Department in Dubai, though the channel was not a “paid”or subscription channel, any hotel or trade establishment found rendering the service to the residents without the company’s consent would be liable for legal action.

The raid would not be made unless the erring establishment’s attention was drawn to correct the irregularity once or twice along with granting the offender a grace period of 15 days, he said.

The ministry would take action if the offence continued to be committed, he said. A verification required that an inspector would have to sometimes stay in a hotel as an inmate to ensure that the offence continued.

The crackdown was designed to be demonstrative for others to abide by the rules, Al Leem said.

According to him, the ministry had organised several training courses, including one on legal arrest, for its staff.

About 40 inspectors in Dubai and Northern Emirates attended the course, he said.

The ministry conducted random inspections even on official holidays during which offenders became active in selling cassettes of children’s games and video cassettes.

The Media Censorship Department in Dubai had received as many as 122,000 reports, he said. The ministry has seized 242,747 items, including DVD’s, CD’s, cassettes, two cover printers, 14 pornographic magazines, 140 software programmes and two smart cards used in receiving TV satellite channel programmes and play station games. Some 31 reports were received from Dubai airport on seizure of 846 CD video and 20 cassettes, he added.
