Every day at Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi, there is a “stormy rain” feature, to entertain and cool the customers.

According to Lamia Hariz, public relations representative for Marina Mall, the rainstorm feature has been introduced this month by the mall and is part of a wider development. “This was part of the Marina Mall’s summer projects, but work is already in progress for a new winter project. In October the Snow Work will open here, which is going to include snow related activities, similar to the one in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates,” said Ms Hariz.

The rains storm lasts for three minutes and it happens three times per day - at 17.30, 19.30 and 21.30. When it starts, the lights are dimmed and the air conditioning is turned up, to give a “cold” sensation. Sound effects create powerful thunderstorm impressions and flashing lights create the illusion of lightning. Then the rain falls, making everyone wet, who happens to walk pass the area. “It certainly took us by surprise”, said Elga Holstein, an Austrian tourist who was visiting the mall with her two young daughters.

“The whole storm is very effective and the kids really enjoyed it. I got a bit wet too, but it doesn’t matter - a few minutes in the sun outside will make everything dry again”, she told Khaleej Times. The rainstorm feature is created by Wet Designs, which has done work in Dubai Marina, Burj Al Arab, Mall of the Emirates and Al Mussala Towers.
