Director-General of the Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid announced this at a Press conference on the sidelines of the FDI World Dental Congress and Exhibition yesterday.

The emergency and trauma centre of the hospital will not be affected as it was revamped recently.

He added, the bed capacity will be doubled. “At present, we have 400 beds, including 130 in the trauma centre in Rashid Hospital. In the new building there will be nearly 800 beds. Residential quarters will also be on the same premises,” he said.

At present, the hospital offers treatment in over 20 specialties. “Once the new project and the hospital’s planned expansion is completed, more specialty departments will be included,” the DG said, without giving details.

He also said the Dubai Dental Centre will be part of Rashid Hospital. “The fastest growing medical field in Dubai is dentistry,” said Murooshid.

Meanwhile, the Al Maktoum Hospital building would be used as a health centre and outpatient clinic.

“This hospital was constructed in the 1970s, but now due to its locality, lack of parking facilities and other issues, we have moved the hospital and accommodated all its departments in other hospitals, including Dubai Hospital, Rashid Hospital and Al Wasl Hospital,” he said.

The Al Maktoum Hospital building would be managed by Dubai Municipality as a heritage site.

Murooshid also said that Dohms already had 16 health centres while at least four more would be added in the next three years.
