"August 6 is the actual birthday of the UAE, which, ever since, has ushered in a new era," said Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, in an editorial of the new issue.

"Before the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan assumed power, we were dispersed emirates with disparate views and interests. But thanks to his far-sightedness and sagacity, Shaikh Zayed was able to bring the once-disunited emirates together and establish a country which is now standing at par with the nations, whose history dates back to hundreds, and sometimes thousands of years," said Shaikh Hamdan, who is also Chairman of the Emirates Falconers' Club.

Elaborating on Shaikh Zayed's policies during the early days, Shaikh Hamdan said human resources development and implementation of infrastructure projects were paramount on Shaikh Zayed's agenda.

"Protection of wildlife, he said, had taken centre stage of Shaikh Zayed's thinking and policies. As an avant-garde falconer, Shaikh Zayed enacted rules for falconry and launched unprecedented initiatives to protect and conserve wildlife. The most notable of these programmes are the Zayed programme for falcons' release, houbara breeding programme, the Oryx breeding programme and the formation of the Environmental Research Wildlife Development and Agency (ERWDA)," said Shaikh Hamdan.
