In preparation for the launch, 68 ‘bus-stop’ signs have already been put up on different routes in the emirate by SPTC.
“We have already started preparations for the launch. And as part of this, 68 bus stop signs out of the total 1,300 have already been installed with the help of the Sharjah Municipality on different routes in the emirate,” said an SPTC official.
He, however, clarified that a short awareness campaign for the commuters would be held alongside the launch.
“People have to be taught how to use the buses to their maximum advantage. They need to be told about the different routes and bus stations before we can actually start the service,” he explained.
With a flat fare of Dh3 and free travel for children below 10 years, the bright orange and white buses will operate on three lines initially — Al Taawun Terminal to Wasit Terminal, Al Ittihad Terminal to Al Nahda Terminal and Al Sharq Terminal to Sharjah International Airport. The central bus terminal will be located at Al Ittihad Square.
Initially, 25 buses are being launched with facilities for special needs people and separate seating arrangements for women and families. By the year-end, there will be 142 buses plying on 18 routes in the emirate.
