According to a source in the Food Control Section of the civic body, precautionary steps has been taken to ensure that food imported from Iran is safe for human consumption. Food product importers have been asked to produce health certificates to prove their imports were free from disease and fit for human consumption, said the source.
The municipality had withdrawn samples of food items imported from Iran and sent them for lab tests, said the source, adding that such tests, however, are routine and done as a rule on every import of foodstuff.
Iran had recently announced an outbreak of cholera in the country. As many as 560 people had contracted the disease, of whom seven had died.
Cholera is an acute illness brought about by bacterium virbo cholera. It spreads when food or drinking water gets contaminated with the bacteria.
It causes acute diarrhoea and vomiting. It could also lead to rapid dehydration and subsequent death if the infected person did not get immediate medical attention.
