Sharjah’s Al Majaz Park getting major makeover
Al Majaz Park in Sharjah is undergoing a major renovation under a project that will set up bridges linking it to Khalid Lagoon and restaurants and recreational areas overlooking the lagoon.
Once the project is completed, it will become a world-class park, according to the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).
The authority in coordination with the emirate’s municipality has started the preparatory work.
Opened in 1990, the park is exquisitely landscaped and has several concrete monuments, palm trees, a fountain and flowerbeds now.
According to Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, Shurooq CEO, the project will transform it into a distinguished family entertainment theme park and attract visitors from across the country and the region.
“It will be designed based on the latest global parks and will provide new and safe games for children, as well as green spaces, landscapes, eye-catching views and special areas designated for walking, meetings and other services,” said Al Sarkal.
Park closed
“The project will be implemented in two phases, with work on phase 1 starting soon. It is scheduled to be completed by November.”
The park will be closed for the duration of the project as it needs to be linked directly to Khalid Lagoon, which will become the waterfront of the park. The project will also involve the development of Corniche Street. “As such, new detours will be set up in coordination with the Department of Public Works in Sharjah,” he added.
The first phase involves construction of a musical fountain on the Khalid Lagoon, opposite the park’s facade. New buildings offering services and facilities such as restaurants, cafes and recreational areas overlooking the lake will be built. The second phase involves construction of six new restaurants and cafes, as well as a special play area for children. New landscapes will also be designed by famous designers from around the world.
Opening for Water Festival
The completion of the project’s first phase will coincide with the launch of the Sharjah Water Festival and Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship. The schedule was chosen to allow the public to watch Formula 1 directly from Al Majaz Park.
The park will also host the Water Festival and its associated activities and events within an area allocated specifically for celebrations and events.
The project is in line with the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and as part of the vision of the authority to develop the emirate and its tourist and economic facilities.
“Shurooq was tasked with preparing studies for the development of several tourist attractions in Sharjah. A study on Al Majaz Park was one of those presented to Shaikh Sultan, who gave the signal to commence work in coordination with the relevant bodies to ensure that it is completed on time,” Al Sarkal said.
The Al Majaz Park development project is aimed at adding aesthetic and recreational features to the park. The aim is to upgrade this vital facility and enhance its status among the tourist destinations in the country and the region, he said.
