The small wooden vessel, used for transporting fresh agricultural products like fruits and vegetables from Dubai to Iran, reportedly sank because of the poorly maintained hull.

A source from the Dubai Police said five Iranian seamen have been rescued from the vessel.

“Sailors from nearby vessels noticed that the dhow was slowly sinking and they heard the crew on board calling for help. They rushed to the vessel to help them,” said the source.

“None of the crew members has been injured and we have hired a small tugboat to tow it to Hamriya Port for repair,” said Captain Khamis Mohd Khamis, Manager of the Hamriya Port and Dubai Creek.

He said the rescue operation is being conducted in cooperation with the Dubai Police Rescue Mission and the Coast Guard. “We are making great efforts to complete the rescue operation and repair the damages.”
