The visit was primarily aimed at familiarising the visiting delegation with the trade rules and regulations, especially those pertaining to Halal food.

The delegation had a special sitting with the senior officials of the Public Health Department including Engineer Salem bin Mesmar, Director of the department, and Khalid Mohammed Shareef, Assistant Director and Head of Food Control Section.

Mr Mesmar welcomed the delegation on behalf of Qassim Sultan, Director-General of Dubai Municipality and thanked the delegation members for their visit to the municipality. Mr Shareef gave a brief presentation about the activities and procedures of the Food Control Section. The municipal officials answered the queries of the members of the delegation regarding the procedures of food export. Den Tohmeena, Senator of Pattani and former Thai minister of Public Health and Interior, who headed the delegation, said that the visit was fruitful as it focused on the trade rules regarding the Halal food. He said the visit was aimed at enhancing the trade relations between Thailand and the UAE, which started in 1975.

"Though we have considerable trade with the UAE, especially Dubai, we were facing some problems regarding Halal food. This visit was focused on studying that problem in detail. We have representatives of foodstuff manufacturing companies in our delegation," Mr Tohmeena.

The delegation visited Jebel Ali and Airport Free Zones and Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "We will ensure that all the food items exported to the UAE wiII be Halal. We have a 45-member body - the Thailand Islamic Council - which looks after the Islamic affairs in the country," he said.

"Thai government encourages the export of Halal food, and we also have an Islamic bank in Thailand" Mr Tohmeena commented. He added that there was a free zone for producing Halal food in Phuket, in southern part of the country. He invited the officials of the Food Control Section of the municipality to visit the Halal food projects in Thailand.

"We would ask the government to encourage more trade with the UAE by asking the food establishments in public and private sectors to involve more in this regard, especially adhering to Halal specifications to increase export of foodstuff to the UAE," he said.

He said that at present, only one Thai company is operating in Dubai in the foodstuff sector; however, the delegation would seek the Thai authorities to encourage more Thai companies to start food production in Dubai. He presented Dubai Municipality officials with special mementoes from Thailand.
