Spring and summer are peak seasons for hay fever as allergy causing pollen is at its highest concentration, according to a Press release issued by Novartis Consumer Health.
For people allergic to pollen, the risk of hay fever is high in the summer, according to Dr Faheem Tadros, an ENT consultant at Al Zahra Hospital and Medical Centre in Sharjah and Dubai. Approximately 10 to 14 per cent of people worldwide suffer from allergies. Although generally not harmful, allergies can cause great discomfort.
Dr Tadros said those planning to travel to cooler climates will undoubtedly be spending much of their time outdoors, exposed to pollen in the air. Trees and flowers in urban parks are enough to trigger an attack. Even in the UAE, where outdoor activities are restricted during the summer, people allergic to pollen are still at risk, even when walking from their cars to their office or home.
"The allergy at first may be confused with the common cold, but the two conditions can easily be told apart. It is advisable for those who suspect that they have the condition to consult their doctors and get tested for the allergy before travelling. Those who have identified their allergy should easily recognise the symptoms and carry proper medication to alleviate discomfort while abroad," he said.
The symptoms of SAR includes discharge of thin, clear mucus and a constantly runny nose that may become too sore to blow, often accompanied with sinus pain and sneezing spasms that exhaust the chest. Other telling symptoms are itchy, watery eyes, nose and mouth, these symptoms are body's immune system reaction to pollen and are caused by the release of histamines into the blood stream.
Fever is not a symptom and the allergy does not only come from exposure to hay. The symptoms are frustrating and tiring, but can be alleviated by using antihistamines.
