White House national security spokesman John Kirby reiterated that the Biden administration is seeking to avoid an escalation in the region
Consul-General Vicente Vivencio Bandillo made this plea at a monthly meeting of Filipino community leaders at the consulate on January 19. He urged them to assist in the month-long elections.
“Representatives of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) from Manila will come to Dubai next month to conduct a training seminar for the volunteers,” Bandillo said.
The Comelec team had initially scheduled their visit to the UAE from February 14 to 16. However, the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi has requested them to re-schedule the seminar and hold it on days most suitable for working Filipino nationals.
“We are still awaiting Comelec’s response. We are hopeful they will reschedule the dates,” Bandillo said.
Philippine’s national elections, which will decide the country’s next line-up of senators and congressional representatives, is scheduled on May 14 this year. The electoral procedures for Filipinos residing overseas will take 30 days for land-based and 60 days for sea-based.
In the UAE, Filipino nationals who have registered for the OAV can vote on any day between April 14 and May 14 at either the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate in Dubai.
Out of the estimated 150,000 documented Filipinos in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, only 12,000 have registered for OAV so far, Khaleej Times has learnt.
