Winners receive literary awards

DUBAI - The Atlas Asianet Literary Awards 2003 aimed at encouraging and promoting literary excellence among Gulf Malayalees were distributed among the winners at a ceremony held at the Indian consulate on Thursday evening.

Present on the occasion were the Indian Consul General, Y.K. Sinha, Joseph Francis, Asianet, Global, K. Chandrasenan, Programme Director, Asianet Radio, M.M. Ramachandran, Chairman of the Atlas Jewellery Group and a host of other dignitaries.

The Indian consul general welcomed the initiative of Asianet and Atlas Jewellery to promote literary pursuits among expatriate Malayalees in different Gulf countries.

The Indian consul general and Mr Ramachandran gave the awards. In the essay category the first prizewinner was Vembanath Vishwanathan from Bahrain. The second prizewinner in the same category was Molly Abraham from Qatar while the third prize went to Nizar Kathungal from Saudi Arabia.

In the short story category, the first prize went to Dr T.P. Naser from Riyadh while Abdunnasir bagged the second prize while the third prize went to Usman Irumbuzhi from Jeddah. In the drama section, Janesh M. was awarded the first prize while the second prize went to Kulamuttan Ahraf and the third to Chirayinkeezhu Anzar.

In the poetry category the first prizewinner was D. Shivaparasad from Saudi Arabia while the second prize went to Sindhu Manhoharan from Dubai and the third prize to Suresh Ramnath also from Dubai. In all the categories the first prize included a prize money of Rs 25,000 plus a memento and a certificate the second prize included a prize money of Rs15,000 while the third prize was Rs10,000.
