Woman found dead in her flat

SHARJAH – A woman was found dead in her apartment in the Abu Shagara area here and investigations showed that she had committed suicide, police said yesterday.

The 31-year-old Asian woman had allegedly strangulated herself using a rope, an investigator said. She was found motionless by her husband.

“He returned home from work on Monday to find her motionless. He immediately took her to Al Kuwaiti Hospital thinking that she had slopped in a coma. Medical examination showed that she had died a long time before she was taken to hospital,” said the investigator.

Investigations revealed the woman was suffering from psychological disorders, Sharjah police said.

“The medical cases of people suffering from psychological problems should always be followed up. They should not be left without follow-up for a long time, to avoid such tragedies,” said a police official.

“Individuals suffering from such problems should get the necessary and complete treatment so that they are safe with themselves and with others," he said.

Monday’s case was the latest of a number of suicides by women, mostly married and having psychological problems.

Last month, a 28-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping from her apartment. The woman, grieving over the death of a sibling, left behind a 20-day-old baby boy.

Police said the woman, from an Asian non-Arab country, was seen jumping from the fifth storey of the building in Al Niba’a area by a young man going to perform pre-dawn prayer. He informed the police Operations Room. Investigators at Al Buhaira police station said the woman lived with her husband in the apartment. She gave birth to a baby boy some 20 days before she took the extreme step.

A probe revealed that the woman was grieving over the death of her brother and was extremely depressed.

A few weeks earlier, a 44-year-old woman jumped to her death from a building. The woman, from a Southeast Asian country, threw herself from the 12th floor flat she was staying in, at Al Ghaweer area. The woman was in a pool of blood when ambulance workers arrived at the scene. Investigations by the Al Gharb police revealed that the woman was suffering from psychological disorders. A police officer said that she was undergoing psychiatric treatment at a health centre.
