During the meeting, they discussed developments on the Arab and international scenes, including the situations in Iraq and Palestine. They discussed the efforts being made to restore security and stability in Iraq and ways to boost peace efforts in the Middle East, in addition to fraternal ties and cooperation between the UAE and Egypt.
Both the leaders condemned Israel’s practices against the Palestinian people as a stumbling block before the roadmap for peace.
They said they would coordinate efforts to convince the international community, notably the Quartet, shoulder its responsibility towards the Palestinian cause.
Egyptian Information Minister Safawat Al Sherif said in a Press statement here later yesterday that Shaikh Zayed and Mr Mubarak stressed in their talks that deterioration in the situation in the Palestinian territories would have serious repercussions on international peace.
“The two leaders underlined the need for concerted efforts to achieve unity of Palestinian action as a cornerstone of the legitimacy of the cause,” he added.
Iraq, he added, had figured high in the talks between Shaikh Zayed and Mr Mubarak, where the two leaders called for expediting constitutional measures that materialises the will of the Iraqi people in an elected government.
On economy, he explained, a number of projects were discussed, including the establishment of an Egyptian trade centre in Sharjah and a 500 million Egyptian pound Emirates-Egypt company for petroleum services. “Trade exchange between the two countries stood at $255 last year.”
Mr Mubarak, he added, would fly today to Saudi Arabia for talks with its leaders on regional and international issues.

Earlier, on arrival here yesterday, President Mubarak and his accompanying delegation were received at the airport by Shaikh Khalifa and a number of senior govenment officials.
