DUBAI— Women in the UAE should have a mammogram done at the age of 37 since the average age of breast cancer is much younger than western countries, says a senior doctor from the Dubai Health Authority.
DHA experts said early treatment is the best way to preserve breasts, battle cancer and is also helpful for those women who need partial or total breast reconstruction as early diagnosis gives plastic surgeons several clinical options to preserve the natural shape and function of the breasts.“The average age of breast cancer in the UAE is much younger than the average age in many western countries,” said Dr Moaza Al Hattawi, chairperson of the DHA Breast Cancer Campaign.
She also said on average, 30 per cent of breast cancer cases received at Dubai Hospital are late diagnosis. Internationally, October is marked as the month of breast cancer awareness each year. Dr Al Hattawi said women need to be aware that the earlier the breast cancer is detected, the better the outcome is. “With advances in science, insertions are minimum and there are high chances of curing the disease as well as preserving the breasts. Delay in treatment can cause the cancer to spread and often saving the breasts also becomes difficult.” Head of Plastic Surgery Unit and Wound & Stoma Care Unit at Rashid Hospital Dr Marwan Ahmad Al Zarouni, said post partial or total mastectomy there are several ways of reconstruction.
“Early detection also helps in breast reconstruction as it gives the plastic surgeon various options to preserve the natural shape and function of the breasts. Functions include capability to breast feed, nipple sensation which is achieved through preservation of nipples.” He advocated the importance of regular screening especially for women with high risk factors.
“Early puberty (before 10 years of age) is one of the risk factors that can lead to breast lumps due to high levels of oestrogen hormone in the body,” he added.
“The lumps can be benign or malignant. Late menopause and pregnancy after the age of 40 are also risk factors for breast cancer. The link between morbid obesity and breast cancer is well established.”
“Poor lifestyle which includes lack of exercise, fast-food culture, stress etc are risk factors for several diseases including breast cancer,” added Dr Al Zarouni.
