Thousands of females and hundreds of males spent their time and money priming their looks last year with other popular procedures being chemical peeling and permanent hair removals. A total of 77,344 skin care treatments were performed in the private healthcare sector in 2012, according to statistics obtained from Dubai Health Authority. “We are seeing a demand for eyebrow lifts and side elevation among females in their 20s in Dubai,” said Dr Qassim Ahli, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Rashid Hospital “most of these are meant to enhance beauty,” he added.

He, however, warned that these procedures were not for teenagers. “Botox works on wrinkles by relaxing the muscles responsible for expression lines and teenagers do not have wrinkles. They may have facial expression lines, but there is a vast difference between that and wrinkles. Botox can start in your late 20s and this depends on your skin type,” he said.

In 2012 alone, at least 3,176 Emirati and 2,050 expatriate females underwent chemical peeling procedures. Expatriate men who underwent the same procedure stood at (235) while 154 Emiratis also used chemical peeling to wash away signs of aging.

“Chemical peels are done through creams which ‘peel away’ the fine wrinkles on the first layer of the skin making it appear younger,” said Dr Ahli. “It is a safe procedure as long as it is done by qualified staff,” he added.

“Laser peeling has the same effect but is more precise,” he said. One thousand and thirty Emirati and 2,463 expatriate females while 134 Emirati and 220 expatriate males underwent this procedure last year.

Permanent hair removal remained the highly sought after procedure with 11,646 female expatriates and 10,571 locals underwent the procedure. 3,235 local and 1,932 male expatriates also had procedures to remove body hair permanently.

Other popular procedures included facials, body contouring, fat melting, LPG for cellulites and mesotherapy (to cut fat cells), skin polishing and refining among others. -asmaalizain@khaleejtimes.com
