The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said it was not likely to recommend travel restrictions now or in the near future to control any spread of Mers-coV.

The response came after reports on Wednesday said that a male Filipino nurse who travelled from the UAE to the Philippines with his family has tested positive.

Philippine officials said that the health worker was exposed to the Filipino worker who died of the Middle East respiratory Syndrome coronavirus last week in the UAE but did not attend to him. This case was the first to test positive for the virus in the Philippines.

Gregory Hartl, head of Public Relations for the WHO, said in a tweet to Khaleej Times: “Travel restrictions would not be placed at this point, and would be very unlikely that we did in the future.”

Philippines Health Secretary Enrique Ona said in news reports that the medic has been isolated and people in contact with him are being traced and quarantined.

The health worker was tested for the virus while in the UAE but the positive results came out only after his arrival to the Philippines. Five other Filipinos who contracted the virus last week are said to be doing well and recovering.

The Ministry of Health and Health Authority Abu Dhabi have reassured citizens and residents that the few positive Mers cases are all well and “we expect them to clear the virus within 10-14 days with no treatment”.

On Wednesday, a Malaysian man became the first Asian to die from the virus. A Saudi man was also reported to have died bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 71.

Symptoms of Mers include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and even diarrhoea. It was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012.
