The medical team at the University Hospital, Sharjah, has performed a complicated prostatectomy on a patient in his 60s who was suffering from cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle.
The team was able to prevent the acute bleeding normally associated with such conditions resulting from the blood-viscosity-reducing drugs used by cardiomyopathy patients to avoid heart attacks. The patient was discharged on the postoperative day following a 24-hour medical observation period.
The team comprised specialists from the UHS’ Cardiology, Anaesthesiology, Urology, and Intensive Care Departments.
The patient’s critical condition in combination with his medical history meant that majority of hospitals would have shown reluctance to admit him due to the lack of modern technologies in their facilities needed to mitigate the risks associated with such procedures, including acute bleeding during and after the operation.
Prof Dr Mohammed Rajae, Urology Consultant at the University Hospital Sharjah and head of medical team said: “The patient has a history of open-heart surgery that involved heart valve replacement and a coronary artery bypass. This heart surgery must be followed by blood viscosity medicines, which caused acute bleeding. The patient was hospitalised.”
Rajae added: “We decided that the medicine the patient was consuming must be changed. He was given another medicine with the same properties, but without side effects on the surgery. The decision was to use bipolar plasma kinetic vaporisation, a technique which stops any potential bleeding. We relied also on the experience of the surgeon in monitoring the patient, controlling any postoperative complications, and ensuring the patient is in a stable condition after the surgery.”
