Timely action saves accident victim's life

Dubai - The impact of the crash was so severe that she had fractured her rib cage and the wall of the aortic artery was ruptured that caused internal bleeding

A young Emirati woman who was rushed to Rashid Hospital's trauma and emergency department after a car crash was saved due to the timely action by doctors.
The impact of the crash was so severe that she had fractured her rib cage and the wall of the aortic artery was ruptured that caused internal bleeding in the chest cavity. There was a rupture and bleeding inside the liver as well. The chances of mortality in such cases is as high as 80 to 90 per cent.
Dr Mamoun Shafaamri, vascular surgeon at Rashid Hospital, diagnosed the patient's condition and carried out several processes to stabilise the patient.
"We immediately took action to provide pain relief for the patient as she was in agony," said Dr Shafaamri. "We lowered her blood pressure to minimise the internal bleeding and simultaneously as the diagnosis was taking place we immediately activated the cath lab to carry out an angioplasty and stenting of the ruptured aortic valve. Every minute matters in such cases, so within minutes we put together a highly qualified multidisciplinary team of experts at 2am."
The team was headed by Dr Shafaarmi and Dr Ayman Al Sibai, consultant interventionist at Rashid Hospital's cath laboratory.
"We performed an angioplasty, which is a minimally invasive procedure," he said.
"This procedure helped immediately stop the bleeding and we managed to perform it under local anaesthesia. To check the bleeding in the liver, an angiography was performed using the same insertion in the groin."
After the procedure, the patient was shifted to the intensive care unit and was kept there under observation for five days until she was fully stabilised. She was then shifted to the normal ward for rehabilitation and will be discharged shortly.
