UAE-based company VPS Healthcare's medicine manufacturing arm, LIFEPharma, has become the first in the region to export Acetazolamide, a medication to treat glaucoma and heart failures, to the US.

"LIFEPharma will be exporting around 25,000 bottles of Acetazolamide, a medication to treat glaucoma and heart failures," LIFEPharma CEO Dr Madgy Fahmy told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the Arab Health on Tuesday. The announcement was made in the presence of VPS Healthcare chairman and managing director Dr Shamsheer Vayalil.

Fahmy added: "LIFEPharma, the region's sole US FDA-certified pharmaceutical unit, will become the first to enter the US market exporting conventional medicines. We are in collaboration with Eywa, a pharmaceutical production company in the US."

Jackson Roy, projects and regulatory affairs team lead at LIFEPharma, explained: "The medicine is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It is used for the treatment of glaucoma and acute motion sickness. The medication also helps in relieving the fear of elevations."
