If you are spending long hours staring at your smartphones, it is time to take a break and blink, according to a leading eye specialist. Dr Yogesh Kapoor, medical director of the newly launched Yateem Eye Center and Day Care Surgery, has over 24 years of experience and is a specialist on corneal disorders.
"A major part of your day is spend staring at electronic gadgets. Students and professionals are spending more than eight hours with gadgets and suffer eye strain. Dry or watery eyes, burning or itching, blurred or double vision and redness are some of the symptoms. There could be soreness in neck and shoulder too," Kapoor said. "The problem is people are not aware or being educated about the symptoms or solution."
He has a tip to avoid Computer Vision Syndrome, which causes pain and strain for the eyes. "It's a simple 20-20-20 rule. After looking into the computer screen for 20 minutes, you should take a break and look 20 feet away and blink 20 times. The normal blinking rate of any human is 18-20 times in a minute but when using a computer the rate drops to 8-10 times," Kapoor said.

Blinking for 20 seconds, he said, will let eyes relax completely. "Keeping the eyes open with the air-conditioning and weather conditions outside will dry away the tears, which leads to problems. It's only by blinking that tear will spread across the eye," Kapoor said. Amid the busy schedules and tonnes of work, you have to keep a reminder every 20 minutes to take a break.
"We always keep prevention ahead of cure. We are fully equipped to do all types of eye surgeries. In future, we will also have cornea transplantation," said Kapoor who specialises in LASIK surgeries and claims to have performed more than 10,000 surgeries, including highly complicated refractive error correction.
Inaugurated by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, Yateem Eye Center and Day Care Surgery is fully equipped with latest technology devices.
Dr Satyam Garudadri, whose expertise is diabetes-related retinal complications, age-related macular disorder and uveitis, said the instrument at their centre is best in the market. The 1,207sq.m. centre in Khalifa City A has diagnostic rooms, examination rooms, consultation facilities, laser room and treatment rooms. Then there are two operation theatres, a state-of-the-art sterile LASIK facility, six beds and two VIP recovery rooms. Dr Ahmed Afra, specialist in glaucoma and general ophthalmology, is also part of the core team of ophthalmologists.
