Hacksaw ridge
IT HAS BEEN ten years since Mel Gibson sat in a director's chair, but this weekend marks his return with World War II story Hacksaw Ridge. Fans of Gibson behind the camera will no doubt be excited as he tackles the true life story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss.

A dedicated religious man, Doss believes in the literal interpretation of the Ten Commandments, focusing on the sixth - 'Thou Shalt Not Kill.' Despite this conviction, Doss enlists in the army and is immediately branded an outcast for his failure to even handle a rifle let alone shoot it. Shipped off to Asia, he enters the battlefield unarmed and with no intention to kill the enemy but rather help his fellow soldiers as a medic, going on to rescue over 75 for which he earned the Medal of Honour.
Starring Andrew Garfield as Doss and a rare foray into decent acting for Vince Vaughn, Hacksaw Ridge is definitely our movie of the week.
Rotten Tomatoes gives it 40%
Trivia
The movie received a ten-minute standing ovation at this year's Venice Film Festival.

 

Shut in
We can't reveal too much about this Naomi Watts film because it is flying very low under the radar and nobody has seen it yet.
 
What we can tell you is Watts plays a child psychologist forced to look after her bed-ridden son after he is involved in a car crash which also kills his father and Watts' husband.  When her New England home is cut off by a storm, Watts is convinced they are not alone and this intruder intends to do them harm.
There is currently no rating for the movie

. The film also stars the fantastic Jacob Tremblay who shot to fame in Room.
Operation Chromite
ON TO OUR second war film of the week and this one does not look so good. Focusing on General MacArthur's 1950 Battle of Inchon - you know, that one everyone's heard about - this South Korean-made film is perhaps a little too niche for an international audience.
 
Liam Neeson does a passable impression of MacArthur who, after South Korean resistance fighters clear the path for an attack, manages to repel the North though the film seems a tad melodramatic.

A tedious geRman ani-mation about a peasant who wishes to become a knight. Miss.
