AF Al Lijam gallops to victory

AF Al Lijam, ridden by Gerald Avranche, landed the 1600m Purebred Arabians Abu Dhabi Classic (UAE Prestige) in great style at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club on Sunday.

The three-year-old daughter of Dedja Des Forges made every strike to catch the mount of Tadhg O’Shea, AF Alriaah in the last stride and prevailed by just a short head on the line.

Top weight Athena showed the way under Antioco Murgia in the early stages of the race before being tackled by AF Alriaah in the home straight. Tadhg O’Shea was going like a winner with less than one furlong to go, but AF Al Lijam came very fast to win it for the French trainer Eric Lemartinel.

Mahalli, ridden by Patrick Goscrave, claimed the 1400m Wathba Stud Farm Cup Handicap for local trainer Jameel Salman ahead of fast finishing Eqtiham under Carlos Sanchez.

Kung Fu came with a late run under Chris Taylor to beat front-runner Nassem Al Reef by a short-head on the line to land the 1400m Purebred Arabians Chaikh Man Conditions opening race of the evening at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club on Sunday.

Trained by Saifaldin Deeb for the Al Reef Stables, the five-year-old son of Babi De Carrere claimed his straight win of the season after his splendid performance in 1700m contest at the Sharjah heavy surface a couple of weeks ago.

In the second race of the evening, Chase Me completed a hat-trick after winning nicely in the 2200m Purebred Arabians Nez D’Or Handicap.

The French trainer went for a quick double after Tadhg O’Shea partnered AF Dhaham to victory in the 2200m Purebred Arabians Bibi De Carrere Maiden, the third race of the evening.

The night was concluded by the only Thoroughbreds event, a 2200m Damas Maiden Race, which was won by Paschdale, ridden by Gerald Avranche for trainer Musabah Al Muhairi.
