Given the runaway success of this year’s Short + Sweet short play theatre festival here in Dubai in February, it is only fitting that some of the best works (including the homegrown winners) be featured in one arena.
Shorter+Sweeter: The Best of Short+Sweet is an extension of the global Short+Sweet Theatre Festival, currently running in seven different countries across 23 different cities. The lively format of successive, quick turnaround plays has found a home at the Madinat Jumeirah tonight and on Friday, May 8. Following the Madinat Theatre performances, the show will be performed at Abu Dhabi Theatre on May 16.
The very best plays from the first three years of the Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival will be shown along with seven of the world’s most popular 10-minute plays, performed by an ensemble of Dubai’s best actors.
Tréteau which won Best Overall Production in Short+Sweet this year, is set entirely in a white plastic frame. This play from Third Half Theatre takes a comical look at theatrical clichés.
“It’s so great to be putting on the play again,” said one of Treteau’s cast members, Shereen Saifudeen (pictured). “Treteau is all about the magic of theatre. It is a true ensemble piece and relies on the chemistry among the cast and the energy we individually bring. We have already showed it five times in three different venues and each time we have so much fun doing it. We’re really excited about showcasing it at the Madinat theatre.”
There’s also the hilarious Royal Shakespeareans present ‘Romeo & Juliet’ where popular stand-up comedian and Ahlan! Hot 100 2015 celebrity Salman Qureshi takes to the stage in a twist-on-a-classic comedy hit.
Tickets start from Dhs75 for adults and Dhs50 for 16 and under. To book tickets go to www.madinattheatre.com
