Ghulam Ali returns to Dubai

GHAZAL LEGEND GHULAM Ali needs no introduction. Famous for compositions like Chupke Chupke Raat Din, Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat, and Mehfil Mein Baar Baar, he will take to the stage yet again tonight at Crowne Plaza Dubai with Jaswinder Singh.

Like Singh, Ali also still considers himself a student because “classical music is like the ocean.”
“Ghazals to me are an essential part of our being - they are an expression of our moods, be it romance or the pain of separation; the beauty of the soul or our surroundings. Music is everything for me; I thrive on live performances and the love of my fans. I am who I am because of music,” he said.

The process of composing a ghazal is a time consuming one, he added. “Lyrics, melody and emotions go hand in hand. One has to find the appropriate tune to fit the poetry involved and it has to bring out the moods expressed in the lyrics - be it desolation, sadness, romance or light-heartedness. I have spent months with poets, trying to understand their work.”

Ali is looking forward to performing once more for his local audiences.

“The overwhelming response to my concerts brings me back here time and time again. The knowledge that people from the UAE have about ghazal music is very deep rooted, they understand the classical line of music which is why singing in front of them is such a treat.”
