Abu Dhabi Festival announces live collaboration between Herbie Hancock and Hamdan Al Abri

AMERICAN JAZZ LEGEND Herbie Hancock will be joined onstage by UAE singer-songwriter Hamdan Al Abri next month.

The concert at the Emirates Palace Auditorium is set for Friday, March 21 as part of the 2014 Abu Dhabi Festival, organised by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF).

The Chicago-born Hancock, 73, became an expert pianist at a young age - going on to join Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet and also releasing solo albums beginning with 1962’s Takin’ Off.

His eclectic career has seen Hancock compose the theme tune to animated show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids as well as dipping into electronica and recording the 2005 collaboration album Possibilities alongisde the likes of Annie Lennox, Sting, Christina Aguilera and Paul Simon. He was also named an honorary UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 2011.

Hamdan Al Abri, 32, is a veteran of the UAE music scene, having supported visiting acts such as Kanye West, Joss Stone and Arrested Development. Last year, he was nominated for an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Middle East Act.

The Abu Dhabi Festival begins on March 2, with an array of international performers set to perform. Tickets are available from all Virgin Megastore outlets across the UAE and online at www.virginmegastore.me.
