We have a great selection of new movies released this week. Among the Hollywood movies, the top attraction is Kidnap, followed by Snatched, The Emoji Movie and many others.
Kidnap
Pretty self-explanatory from the title here, but it's nice to see Halle Berry back on screen. In Kidnap she plays a single mother taking care of her young son. During a routine game of Marco Polo in the park, a few too many 'Marcos' go unanswered before Berry realises her child has been abducted. Knowing time isn't on her side, she takes the law into her own hands and in a Taken style chase, aims to rescue her son alone.
Snatched
No, this isn't a sequel to Guy Richie's Snatch, rather Amy Schumer's latest comic caper. She and mother, Goldie Hawn, go on vacation to south America only to get kidnapped from their resort. Escape is the name of the game here and there are quite a few laughs along the way, but it's certainly not Schumer's best as the duo try to remain one step ahead of their captors in order to make it to the US Embassy in Colombia.
The Emoji Movie
For a time, statistically the worst film ever made remaining on 0% on Rotten Tomatoes after release, The Emoji Movie has found a critical fan pushing the score up to a heady 6%. We're not going into the plot because there isn't really one, but we will say Emojis are pretty central to a lot of peoples' communication these days, they deserve a better movie!
Toilet Ek Prem Katha
(Bollywood)
"Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" is reportedly inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A love story with a satirical flavour, the movie is directed by Shree Narayan Singh, and produced by Aruna Bhatia, Plan C Studios and Abundantia, and presented by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and KriArj Entertainment.
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Bhumi Pednekar
Chunkzz
(Malayalam)
Malayalam cinema is offering another story from the same 'engineering' league. Of course, belonging to an altogether different genre, the film Chunkzz has raised hue and heckles for its content. As Chunkzz comes to theatres in the UAE this week, do not tell us that you were not fore-warned: The film travels some wild routes that might not be so appealing for all. Set in an engineering college, Chunkzz talks about four loafer friends, who dream of nothing but having a good time in the usual 'bad' ways. When a lone woman, older than them, joins their college as a student, the jokes and direction of the film can only go one way.
Starring Vishak Nair, Honey Rose, Balu Varghese
Jab Harry Met Sejal
(Bollywood)
The story revolves around Harry and Sejal's journey across Europe. A search for Sejal's engagement ring makes Harry understand love and relationships better. Sejal experiences new found freedom, security and solace in Harry's company and in between all of this - there is love, life, lies, thrill, fantasy and the search for the voice within. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, Evelyn Sharma
47 Meters Down
