Fatma AlMulla
As an Emirati, what does National Day mean to you? How do you celebrate?
The UAE has come so far, every year I'm in awe of the new challenges set and accomplished by my country. This makes me incredibly proud to be an Emirati and to celebrate that every year is such an honour.
What can you tell us about your National day collaboration with Sunglass Hut?
The designs on the Sunglass Hut x FMM special edition sunglass cases are a reflection of my love for my home, the UAE - a country that has given me so much inspiration behind my brand; FMM Dubai. They really are my ode to the country on our National Day.
How did you get into designing? Was it a smooth ride and do you think being in the UAE makes it easier for someone to pursue their dream?
From a very young age, I always loved art and drawing. I pursued art in school and in university and organically found my style. I wouldn't say it was a smooth ride, it came with it's challenges but I'm thankful that I am able to do what I love every day. I don't think the UAE makes it easier, as I'm sure is the case in most countries; I am challenged in ways that I didn't expect, and so it's really about the effort and time you put into making your dream a reality.
Can you describe your style and what your designs offer UAE customers that others perhaps don't?
I love colour, and I love to incorporate colour and patterns in my daily life. I think I reflect this through my designs for FMM.
What do you think of the UAE's fashion scene overall? Is there anything you'd like to change?
It's booming, it's so creative. With social media playing such a big part in all of our lives, we get a glimpse into the 'ootd' of inspiring people every day! I think the UAE is very experimental with fashion. Local Emirati girls can be very stylish, it really takes an eye for creativity and styling to turn a piece of clothing that is so rooted in heritage and tradition and make it individual!
Who are your fashion icons? Is there anyone you'd like to work with in the industry?
Iris Apfel is my ultimate icon! She is so unique and true to herself. She has an eye for style. Such an effort into creating a style that's incredible but she makes it seem effortless. I think she has changed accessories; she broke the rules and created something that is now.
From where do you get your inspiration?
My son really inspires me, seeing the world through his eyes, the way that he explores new surroundings and experiences.
. Believe in yourself and be confident in what you want to wear.
. Don't blindly follow trends; follow what fits your personality and what feels right to you.
. Invest in the right pieces; the right bag, piece of jewellery or perfect coat will stay with you forever.
