Amnesty offer

It is, indeed, a golden opportunity for all those overstaying in the country to have a safe exit to their motherland without having to pay any hefty fines or undergoing a prison sentence.

Statistics show that during the last amnesty call, around 342,000 people availed the opportunity. Despite amnesties on previous occasions, several thousand people are still 
believed to be overstaying — and are not in a position to pay for fines. I think the main deterrent for those illegal residents are not the fines but the ‘no entry’ status they get while leaving the country.

Even if they are eligible to return after a certain period, people don’t have any clear information on this aspect.

The authorities concerned are requested to make clear the policy details in this regard
