Good teamwork

What is teamwork? I read somewhere that it means ‘Together Everyone Achieves More’.

However, I see the meaning of teamwork in the word itself. Remove ‘team’ from the word and you are left with only ‘work’. Exactly that is what happens at most work places. If you do not enjoy what you are doing, then it is simply ‘work’.

After the Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL, Captain Gautam Gambhir said: ‘A captain does not make a good team, a good team makes a good captain’. How true is that? In the finals Gautam Gambhir failed with the bat and in came Manvinder Bisla from nowhere and taking the team to victory with his outstanding performance. Was it good teamwork winning or good captaincy? Yes, it was the teamwork win. How the group of players from different states, religions, cultures and even countries became a ‘team’.

Surely there is something that makes such moments happen. It is the captain who nurtures the team and builds it. He needs to provide principled leadership.

And when the team wins, we have the captain saying ‘ I am lucky to have such a good team’ and the team saying ‘ we are lucky to have such a good captain’. Now that is what I mean by good teamwork.
