To clarify, despite its name, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is not high in fructose. Just like table sugar, HFCS is made up of glucose and fructose. In fact, scientific research has shown the two are so similar in structure that our bodies process both the same. The attempt to claim this single ingredient is uniquely responsible for obesity is also inaccurate. According to the American Medical Association, HFCS is not a risk factor. Sugar-sweetened beverages can be enjoyed in moderation, just as with other sources of calories.
