Having dispatched two English captains into Test oblivion, Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan, the recent triumph over the English, thus securing a number one Test championship title, and, with it the one-dayers, a first in world cricket in claiming all three formats of the games’ world status.

The recent threat by current skipper, Andrew Strauss, that he, too, would resign from the captaincy, is bad news for a side that under his stewardship. His side has managed, for the first time in many years, glory in both Test and one-day cricket.

Coming soon after the Kevin Petersen debacle, and also dumped by England, though no fault of the SA skipper, it makes Smith the proverbial axe-man.
