Israel has been pounding the Gaza strip from air and sea and has destroyed over a hundred targets within a span of few hours, which is no less than a declaration of war against a helpless nation. Furthermore, the fear of a complete Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip is in the air with the mobilisation of 75,000 reserve troops.

The world condemns Israel’s deadly attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. Tens of thousands of people across the Middle East, Asia and Europe held demonstrations to protest the Israeli aggression against the people of Palestine on Friday.

Nevertheless Israel still enjoys the support of the USA and Britain. This is disappointing
and very biased. Israel’s acts of barbarism against a hapless community amount to war crimes but the US defense secretary Leon Panetta and British
PM David Cameron put the principal responsibility for the crisis on Hamas.

Another fact, however, is that Israel will have to deal with new geo-political realities in the region and a ground attack on Gaza will no more be “a walk in the park” for Israel. Hamas is likely to deter the move with full might. Likewise, the intervention of extra territorial elements like Hezbollah could not be ruled out. Moreover, Egypt’s new Islamist President Mohammad Mursi is determined to find a solution for the conflict.

This is the time for the UN and the world powers to rise above their vested economic and political interests and stop appeasing Israel. The apartheid regime of Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza, which has been blockaded since June 2007.

The people of Gaza do not have basic rights such as freedom of movement, adequate healthcare and education.
This is the time for the UN and the world powers to rise above their vested economic and
political interests and stop appeasing Israel.
